Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce

This Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce recipe was the best souvenir from a trip to New Orleans and a class at The New Orleans School of Cooking. It's easy to make, and you can tweak the ingredients to your liking. YUM!
Ingredients
  • 1 10 oz loaf of stale French bread crumbled (or 6-8 cups of any stale bread)
  • 4 cups milk
  • 2 cups of sugar (this can be reduced to 1 cup if using raisins and coconut)
  • 8 tablespoons of butter, melted
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Whiskey Sauce
  • 8 Tablespoons of butter
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • ¼ cup Bourbon Whiskey
Instructions
  1. Mix milk, sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl.
  2. Add crumbled bread, raisins, coconut, and pecans and stir.
  3. The mixture should be very moist but not soupy.
  4. Pour into a buttered 9 X 12 baking dish or larger.
  5. Place into a non-preheated oven.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees F. for approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

  8. Can be served warm topped with sauce.
  9. Whiskey Sauce
  10. Cream butter and powdered sugar over medium heat in a heavy saucepan until all the butter is absorbed.
  11. Remove from heat and blend in egg yolks.
  12. Pour in the bourbon whiskey gradually to your taste, stirring constantly.
  13. The sauce will thicken as it cools.
  14. Serve warm with the bread pudding.
  15. Feel free to substitute your favorite fruit juice or liqueur in place of the whiskey.
