Party Coming up? I’ve got you covered. Red Wine Sangria is a festive drink that makes a beautiful presentation, and you’ll wow your guests with the bright colored fruit floating in the rich burgundy color of the red wine. For the Merlot and red wine lover in your group; it’s perfect!
Red Wine Sangria
When we’re preparing for a gathering with family and friends, it’s supposed to be fun. Right? We’re always looking for recipes that are not only easy to make but have a great taste. You know that recipe – the one that everyone wants! Well, this one pretty much covers it all. For our group, gatherings can be large, and a drink prepared in advance is a must. Drinks that I share here at Sock Box 10, like the Bourbon Whiskey Slush recipe, are usually X 4 (not a typo), and any leftovers in the freezer are a plus. For the Red Wine Sangria, doubling the recipe will fill a large glass jar plus, so be prepared with your containers. I love preparing it in glass because of the beautiful color and the fruit.
A real bonus about this recipe, other than the great taste, is that it can be ready to drink in 3 hours or you can make it up to 24 hours in advance. The fruit grabs the color of the wine after soaking, so when you’re ready to serve, pour it over ice and top the glasses with fresh fruit or use your favorite garnishing technique. Now for a confession. I’ve been known to add additional wine and brandy to the fruit that is left in the bottom of the jar. Yes, true. Especially if it’s warm outside. There. I said it.
Recipe Tips
- Make the simple sugar in advance. It’s always nice to have simple sugar in the frig during the summer months for iced beverages like teas and coffee.
- The recipe makes eight servings. I would double the recipe; you’ll be glad you did.
- To serve, pour over ice. Adding ice to the pitcher will dilute the sangria.
- Have fresh fruit cut to top the drink when serving.
- It tastes great 3 hours after making it or 24.
- Looks great served in a variety of glasses.

Thanks for stopping by, Rose
- 1 orange, sliced
- 1 lime, sliced
- 1 lemon, sliced
- 1½ cups simple sugar
- ¾ cups fresh orange juice
- ½ cup lime juice
- 1 (750- milliliter) bottle of dry red wine
- 1 cup brandy
- sliced fruit for garnish (optional)
- I like to make the simple sugar in advance, so it is chilled or at least room temperature.
- To make simple sugar, boil equal parts of water and granulated sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Stir often.
- In a large pitcher or jar, combine sliced orange, lime, lemon and simple sugar.
- Press firmly with a wooden spoon or a muddler to mash the fruit and release the juices.
- Add the wine, brandy, orange juice and lime juice and stir for 15-20 seconds.
- Cover and refrigerate for 3 to 24 hours.
- Before serving, stir to combine and pour over ice and garnish.
- Pour over ice but don't add until right before serving. You don't want to dilute the sangria.
- I love making it in a large glass jar. The sliced fruit is colorful and very festive. Perfect for any party!
- The prep time does not include chilling or making the simple sugar in advance.
- ENJOY!
- This recipe has gone through a couple of adaptations that started with "Party Drinks" by A. J. Rathbun (Harvard Common Press)
